African Art (My thesis)

                                                         

African art,Theme for my final thesis project.African culture is full of bright colors with so many traditional motifs a lot of  beads work,embroideries.I did a complete research to get a proper information about their culture and their motifs to copy those on the products.There are six interior products.

1.Curtain

This product was made on pure raw silk with digital printing. The image on the curtain was taken from my visual research.The design of the curtain was simple and unique in style,One single piece of window.Its short and long hangings on the top. are very different from other common curtain designs.A typical African leaf motif was used on these hanging by embroidery and beads work.Bright colors are used to give a complete look of African style.

                               2.Rug

The floor rug is round in shape with typical African geometric designs.Two techniques have been used to make this rug is hooking and lashing.The only material used n the rug is wool.The colors are again bright similar to the curtain.

                                                                                                         

                         
3.Wall Hanging

                                                         

This is a unique piece weaved on jute with wooden sticks of  two colors,yellow ocher and white.These colors are very common in African culture.Wooden round beads were used to in the center and woolen made tassels were hanged at the bottom.The upper section of the wall hanging   was dyed in dark brown color.The jute is hanged on the wooden stick and the stick was carried by the beads.


                       

                                                            4.Floor Lamp

 The design of the floor lamp was simple to work on.Grip silk was used.Jute was dyed in red,green and yellow ocher for the patchwork with golden leather.Two masks were made in the center of the lamp with silk painting.Embroidery was done on the edges of the patch work with beads stick on it.An interesting thing was done in the center of the lamp.Wooden sticks were wrapped with thread with some large beads on it were placed in the center to enhance its style and to look different from all other lamps.  

              

                                     
















      5.Table Mat


Table mat was designed in a square shape to give a rough look as it was required according to their culture.Jute was used again with some bead work,patch work in the center and embroidery was done on the edges of the patch work and all around the mat.

                                                   
                                                            6.Bed Set

The complete bed set includes eight pieces 1 bed spread,1 quilt cover,2 pillow covers,2 bed cushions and 2 floor cushions.A lot of experiments were done while making this set.A very unique motif was designed on these eight pieces in which embroidery was done on all the pieces with patch work of net and fur.net was used on the quilt,floor cushions and pillows for ruffles and fur was used on bed cushions,quilt,and pillows.Yellow ocher,dark brown,red,green and black were the basic colors for this bed set similar to other products.                                                                                      

Weaving

Warp and weft are the techniques used in weaving.My project was to make a weaved wall hanging by using different materials.I used woolen thread some fancy laces of organza and silk..The wall hanging is very simple in colors and style.I used three basic colors black, fawn and red.The pattern of this wall hanging is divided into sections in which different material has used.
 An iron rod was made to hold the hanging with velvet straps.
 At the end of the hanging two tassels were added the each corner to give a finishing look.










This project was again a wall hanging but in a different way.I create this pattern first on a card board then started weaving.I used too many bright colors to make it a little funky as my pattern is also abstract.If u zoom this picture u can clearly see the warp and weft.

Handmade Jewelery

                                                                                              

Hand made jewelery is made every where in the world.Different people use different material according to the theme or culture.I tried to make it very simple and unique in style.I used wooden small and large rings with thread wrapped on those wooden rings.creating a casual necklace and earrings.

                                                                                                       

This jewelry is made with a traditional look of Asian culture using bright red crystals with silver coated fancy thread knotted with these crystals.

                                                                   

                                                                     

Replica

I was in love with this image when i first saw this in my research book.I was given a task to make a replica.I tried to make a replica using mix media.I used black leather for the woman and the kid.Newspaper was used.Cotton was used in different colors for the bright background as shown in the above original image.wooden sticks are used at the back of woman.A wooden earing has been used on the woman's ear as shown in the above original image. 

  

Contemporary Art

This is a free hand painting showing the culture of African women.Made on pure grip silk using the techniques of silk painting and batik.
It was a challenge to complete this in 7 hours.Wax was used for batik in different sections in this painting.Silk paints were used.

Another hand made lamp inspired by contemporary art.The shape of the lamp is completely modern.Grip silk is used with mix techniques of batik and silk painting.Another interesting things is used to enhance the look of the lamp.Sugar and salt effect is used with silk paints.


                                                                                                    

Royalty

   Royalty was my theme for the complete bed set in which three techniques were used stenciling,block printing,tie & dye.According to the theme i used very rich colors like olive green,dusty gold and dark maroon.They gave a very rich look.The bed set includes nine pieces.The bed spread on which stenciling and tie & dye has applied on a grip silk.                                          

                         
Cut work has been done on the edges of the bed spread with embroidery and bead work.The quilt cover on which patchwork with block printing and stenciling has been done with bead work.
           

                                                                     





Pillow covers with block printing and tie & dye.Three bed cushions with stenciling and bead work.The floor cushion has all three techniques merged together and hand made tussles hanged at the corners.












                                                               

                                                                                   

Bags All Around

The bags were my first product in which stencilig is used.Five bags were made this is one of those five bags.An orange cotton fabric is used.Theme for stencling is floral.For this bag i used the tulip shape.When stenciling was done on the fabric the next step was to design a unique bag shape.I thought a triangular shape would be a very unique design.I added a wooden handle with a hand made embelished silk thread.Small beads were used overall.                                                                                     

The second bag was circular in shape and the fabric used was Jeans in dark blue color.Stenciling was applied in the front with some glittering effect to enhance stenciling.Wooden handle was
used.
